Soldier's car gets surprise makeover - by Ethan Forhetz, KY3 News

  • Ford Mustang Ltd. Edition

MARSHFIELD, Mo. -- There are just a few things worse than your car breaking down. Here's one: you're a member of the military and your car breaks down while you're home on leave. And you have to leave it where it broke down, in another state, so you can return to duty.

That happened to a man from Marshfield but some local people are making it right.

There was a flurry of activity at Sound Envision on Friday. The co-owners, Towbin Winslow and Luke Anderson, were working on a high priority audio job.

"We've got a weeklong project to do in three days."

"We're crunchin'."

The job was for Army Sgt. Justin Davis, stationed near Tokyo, Japan. His Ford Mustang Limited Edition 'Bullitt' -- his pride and joy -- needs a full makeover after it broke down on a road trip in Arizona while the soldier was on leave.

The car is traveling the country, being fixed and customized for free by volunteers like the guys at Sound Envision, who are giving it a killer sound system. It's going to be a surprise to Davis.

"He doesn't know what's going on but he knows it's getting redone."

They're doing what they can do for a soldier who's doing so much for us. Next, the car will be shipped off to be repainted. The work is being rushed so it will be ready to be shown at a big car show in Las Vegas next month.

Davis is scheduled to return home in January.

Does my system need a Capacitor?

Capacitance will help any system. A "cap" charges and discharges faster than a battery, so when an amplifier is demanding power from a charging system it pulls from the cap instead of the battery. When a cap is installed in line with a battery the charging system does not have to work as hard to provide for a amplifier, and the amplifier is receiving the voltage it needs to produce clean power. This usually results in a increase of output of said amplifier up to 20%. The rule of thumb is 1 farad of capacitance per one thousand watts of power, but any system will benefit from a capacitor. Remember, when a car manufacture designs their charging system it does not include an after market amp that requires 80 extra amps from a alternator and battery.

What is RMS wattage?

RMS power (wattage) or voltage is continuous power that a speaker or amp can produce or deliver. Not to be confused with the max power which is the number used to market the product. Max power is the wattage measured right before failure. RMS power is the number you should compare when shopping for amplifiers. Also it should be the number you are concerned with when matching an amplifier to a subwoofer or speaker.

Do I need a single or dual voice coil subwoofer?

Once you have decided on a brand of subwoofer you may run into an ohm load issue. Depending on the type of amplifier you have or are looking at will determine what you need. There are two kinds of amps that work well with subs: two-channel bridgeable and mono blocks. When you are using a twochannel amp, most are 2 ohm stable. Here is where it gets tricky, you need to get to a four ohm load at the amp, because when you bridge an amplifier it doubles down again internally, giving you a two ohm load. Typically a one dual voice coil sub or two single voice coil subs will get you to where you need to be. When using a mono block amp the ohm load does not change in the amp, So the ohm load you put it needs to be the target amount. Dual voice coils work best for this. Dual voice coil subs do not handle more power than single ones, they just give you more flexibility to get the best out of your amplifier.
